Part of Artstation’s National Heritage Lottery Fund: interpretation of Flat Holm
Read by Glenn Davidson
On 14th March 2022, I paddled across the tide of the Severn Estuary with experienced kayaker Tavi Murray. We left from Penarth, paddling up the coast to Lavernock Point, then headed onward across the wave field to Flat Holm.
I am riding a ‘fluid wave field’ which undulates under the influence of the moon, tides, and wind. Marconi was amongst the first to see the potential of riding the electromagnetic field in the estuary, releasing the energy of communication across the world. The journey is my way to celebrate the world’s first over-water transmission, tracing the same route as in May 1897.
Here is a podcast of that experience. Having been difficult to record, it is a soundscape of rapidly changing conditions and orientations. It is annotated by our voice communications, as we share the experience across the water between our kayaks. Don’t fall out!
